Theatrical Experience & Background
Having trained as an actor at the Royal Welsh College of Drama (1991 - 1994), Jago worked as a theatre actor in his native UK for over a decade, building credits in fringe, Theatre-In-Education and small-scale touring companies, and regional repertory theatres such as the Chichester Festival Theatre, Theatre Clwyd, and The Sherman as well as West End credits on Little London's 2004 production of After Chekhov in which he played the title role.
Following a stint at Theatre-In-Education company Spectacle Theatre Co in South Wales, he began work as a commissioned playwright for Spectacle with Arts Council of Wales funding, writing several plays for the company over a two-year period.
Following his move to the United States in 2007, he continued to develop as a writer and also began directing theatre. Having won a place on the 2014 Directors Lab West, he founded the Los Angeles based theatre collective Raze The Space and launched a 'Global Theatre for Global Audiences' initiative in association with the Literature Department of the Los Angeles Public Library in Downtown L.A.
Until the pandemic, Raze The Space produced its international ten-minute play festival at the public library's Mark Taper Forum, a 235-seat theatre inside the Los Angeles Central Library. Performances featured six new plays, each with its own cast and director, and brought together a creative team of more than thirty artists. A key part of the initiative was to bring quality new writing for the stage from around the world to L.A. and ensure that all public performances were free. The festival succeeded in its goals and attendance at its performances were always at capacity.
